Community Spirit
Supporting our local island community groups and families
St John’s Goodwill Opp Shop
First opening over the summer of 2015/16, St John’s Goodwill Opp Shop offers recycled and occasionally brand new treasures. From designer clothing and shoes for all the family to mainstream fashion garments we aim for quality clean goods made from natural fibres like cotton, linen, silk, wool and merino. Handmade items are particularly valued.
The majority of goods are not priced and to make our goods accessible to those on a tight budget and instead a donation/koha is made by the customer. There’s also linen, books, toys, art, pots and pans, crockery and cutlery. All of which are donated by people in our community, from both permanent and holiday homes.
All our workers are volunteers and their mahi aroha enables funds received to circle back into Aotea’s community via the widespread charitable trusts network. As of January 2025, $105k has flowed back to community groups from schools and preschool to Boardriders club to air ambulance and our amazing health trust and AFSG. This is our purpose while at the same time supporting and practising recycling ethics and values.

Emergency Food Bank
Our Emergency Food Bank is for all Great Barrier Island residents as a temporary support in a time of crisis. Operated by St Johns Community Church for over 25 years, we now have a new designated dry, lined and vermin proof building, built with funding from cyclone Gabrielle Relief Fund. Volunteers give their time to purchase, sort and deliver these emergency food boxes.
These consist of household staples, basic dry, tinned goods with fresh fruit, vegetables, and perishables items are purchased from the local stores. We appreciate the annual COGS grant for providing financial support to aid with purchases. Criteria for emergency food referrals is via the community workers, AFSG, the Aotea Medical Centre and other island agencies.
Application forms available on request.
Located in a bushland setting at beautiful Karaka Bay, Orama is a unique place to enjoy a personal or group retreat. Slow down, disconnect from daily life and reconnect with God.
Every Thursday evening, join the surrounding community for ‘Neighbours Night’ or drop in Saturday morning for a coffee and brunch. A wonderful experience for both individuals and families.
